Identifying the qualities of a mentor is a very individual thing and the type of mentor you need may vary at different times of your life. If your mentor is also an effective leader they should be able to play the different roles you need at different times.
Going through this process helps you identify the type of person you’re looking for and as long as you trust them and feel safe with them you should feel confident about approaching them.
Tip – remember that you need to find someone who can commit to the plan you propose. When working with adults you need to consider their time constraints such as family, work and outside interests – sport for example. Be brave and ask this question at the beginning to set the expectations for the mentor relationship. If they can’t commit, look at finding someone else.
